2019 KEHA State Meeting

Thank you to everyone for your support of the 2019 KEHA State Meeting. It takes every area across the state fulfilling their assignments to make the meeting happen. Below please find a few highlights from the meeting. Additional details are included in a feature story on the KEHA website.

• 575 people were registered, including 95 first-time attendees.
• $2,647 was raised through the theme basket raffle for the UK Ovarian Cancer Research Program.
• $1,626 was raised through the silent auction and will support hosting the 2021 National Volunteer Outreach Network Conference.
• $2,504 was raised through the quilt square auction to support the KEHA state meeting.
• The new Knit and Crochet Corner produced 55 comfort blankets for donation to Norton Children’s Hospital. This on-site service project will return next year with new instructions for donations. Watch for details in an upcoming issue of News and Notes.

Welcome New KEHA Officers

Welcome to the three newly elected KEHA state officers and chairmen who will serve three-year terms beginning July 1, 2019.

• Secretary: Judy Jackson, Grant County
• 4-H Youth Development Chairman: Cathy Kunkel-Mains, Kenton County
• Management and Safety Chairman: Elaine Stevens, McCracken County

In addition, Karen Hill from Henderson County is completing her one-year term as president-elect and will begin a three-year term as president on July 1st.

NEW -- KEHA Leadership Academy

During the 2019 KEHA business meeting, the voting delegates approved a proposal to fund and hold a pilot KEHA Leadership Academy in March 2020. The goal of the academy is to strengthen leadership skills for emerging leaders within the organization and increase the pool of leaders available to hold county, area and state level elected and appointed positions. The academy will recruit up to 30 participants, with each area encouraged to provide the names of two delegates and one alternate. An application process will be utilized to select participants. Full details, along with the application form, are available on the KEHA website and accessible via Quick Links and under Member Resources. Applications are due to the appropriate KEHA Area President by October 1, 2019! Please promote within your county and encourage eligible members to apply. The eligibility guidelines are detailed on the application form.

County Quilt Squares Needed

KEHA is partnering with the U. S. Census Bureau to construct a quilt featuring one square from each county for use in promoting the 2020 Census. County KEHA organizations are asked to construct one quilt square. It should be an unfinished 6 ½ inch block made with 100% cotton fabrics. Pre-washing in recommended, as is a white background and design colors featuring yellows, blues and/or greens. Each county will select the pattern or design and should emphasize unique characteristics of the county. Each square should be mailed with a sheet of paper listing the name, address and phone number for the quilter; county name; and a brief description of the quilt block design, including any historical notes. Blocks must be mailed by August 1st to Kim Henken, University of Kentucky, 102 Erikson Hall, Lexington, KY 40506-0050. A flyer including the complete project details is available on the KEHA website under Quick Links, along with a photo of a similar quilt crafted by groups across the state for the 2010 Census.

KEHA Marketing Banners

Counties received a new marketing item at the 2019 KEHA State Meeting. Voting delegates picked up new mini-tabletop banners for county use in marketing. If your county did not have voting delegates attend the meeting, the posters will be distributed to the remaining counties this summer and early fall through various area meetings and activities.

2019 Voting Delegate Packet

Each year, county voting delegates receive a packet of information upon signing in for the KEHA annual business meeting. The packet includes reports and materials relevant to the business meeting agenda. The complete packet is now available on the KEHA website on the State Meeting page.

KEHA Cultural Arts Passport

Marilyn Watson, KEHA Cultural Arts & Heritage Chairman, introduced a new contest for her chairmanship during the training session at the KEHA State Meeting. The Cultural Arts and Heritage Passport encourages members to visit cultural, historical and heritage sites, art museums, state parks, and more! A printable passport has been developed and is now available on the Cultural Arts & Heritage Chairman web page. It is recommended to print the cover on blue paper and the passport pages on white, double-sided. The files are set-up with two booklets per page and can be cut prior to stapling assembling, stapling and folding. The new KEHA Cultural Arts and Heritage Program of Work will be added to the website by the end of June.

2020 KEHA State Meeting

Planning is underway for the 2020 KEHA State Meeting to be held April 21-23 at the Owensboro Convention Center. The room block will open for reservations in July. Information will be posted to the KEHA website (www.keha.org).

KEHA Choir

Congratulations to the members of the KEHA Choir under the direction of Wendy Hood, Choir Director and Mercer County KEHA President, on another outstanding performance. The choir will continue in 2020, and new members are welcomed. Interested KEHA members should send a $10 check payable to: Wendy Hood, 202 Park Avenue, Harrodsburg, KY 40330-1616. The funds will be used to cover the cost of copying and mailing sheet music and a rehearsal disk to the chorus members. The music will be provided in February 2020. A rehearsal will be held at the 2020 KEHA State Meeting, along with a performance.
