Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association 2nd Leadership Academy
The 2nd KEHA Leadership Academy was held March 1-3, 2023. The Academy included 20 attendees from 18 different counties, 6 committee members, 2 UK Extension advisors, and 11 different presenters. KEHA’s goal for the academy was to strengthen leadership skills for emerging leaders within the organization and increase the pool of leaders available to hold county, area, and state level elected and appointed positions. The KEHA state board budgeted $10,000 to help fund the academy, keeping costs low for participants.
This two-day workshop focused on leadership styles, parliamentary procedure, communication skills, understanding personalities, and organizational assessment. The academy also included information on diversity and cultural competency, teamwork, sharing your message, generating ideas, and KEHA history. All speakers were rated highly on the evaluations.
Attendees planned to implement information from all sessions when returning home. All participants agreed or strongly agreed with the following statements: 1) overall, the KEHA Leadership Academy helped me enhance my leadership skills; and 2) overall, the KEHA Leadership Academy has increased my confidence to be a leader.
One attendee noted on her evaluation: “I was nervous on drive here but I have thoroughly enjoyed (what I) learned and have such excitement from this academy. I have LOVED it all. Thank you!!”
Another stated, “I am happy that I attended this Leadership event. I left with a lot of ideas and information to take back to my county. Thank you.”
The 2023 KEHA State Meeting included two Leadership Academy sessions. One session was for graduates of either the first or second (2020 or 2023) Leadership Academies. Another session was informational for anyone interested in attending a future Leadership Academy.
Participants in the 2023 Leadership Academy will develop a “payback” plan to complete at least 40 hours of volunteer service within 12 months. They are encouraged to start something new or rebuild an existing program in the FCS extension homemaker organization. Taking on new officer leadership positions is highly encouraged.
